Floodwater monitoring with Horizons
PTC Trust continued to partner with Horizon Regional Council scientists in creating another wonderful opportunity for rangatahi. The Monrad students were absolutely thrilled to experience a day in the life of Horizon scientists Damon, Micah, Izzie, Luke and Mikey. The group learnt about:
identifying invertebrates;
measuring water clarity;
flood levels and depth;
river flow and the
use of drones to assess water quality.
Enthusiasm, energy and engagement were overflowing as the students grasped how flood protection, land drainage, river flows and a range of engineering activities are paramount in Horizon’s ability to keep the region safe. Students were reminded of the 2004 floods across Manawatu. What first was considered just heavy rains on Sunday, February 15, 2004, suddenly became a once-in-a-lifetime flooding event that damaged 200 homes and resulted in over 500 evacuations.
Since 2004, the Horizons team shared the range of measures that have been put in place to keep our people safe. Moreover with heavy rains becoming the new normal, regional councils across Aotearoa are finding themselves developing even more creativity and ingenuity.
Managing our waterways was also an important task undertaken by these scientists. Youth were able to see how new technology such as the Aquadrone and computer-controlled RC Gauging boat can be utilised to perform scientific tasks usually done by hand.
The role of AI (artificial intelligence) for environmental monitoring has become even more critical in light of the impending threat of climate change.
With faces aglow and everyone pumped, science, tech, engineering and maths came alive for thee young minds.
PTC Trust looks forward to continuing investing in the education and development of our youth as we build a more resilient and STEM- empowered future generation.
